Golden Ghana: Pressing problems and solutions for land management

Vincent Oberdorf is a student of International Development Studies at Utrecht University who recently conducted research on land issues in Ghana for his Master’s thesis. Here he writes about some of the things he encountered.

In Ghana, land is under increasing pressure. In some parts of the capital city, Accra, land prices are higher than in Manhattan, and in rural areas, stakeholders ranging from Chinese gold miners to European biofuel producers are after a share. From mapping to surveying

Mapping with a hand-held GPS receiver is fast and easy, but the accuracy is limited, especially in often worse if the satellite signal is blocked by vegetation.

While this method is sufficient for documentation of farm plots in the customary system, we want to provide higher accuracy to our customers, and also give them the option to register parcel in the national cadastre.

Landmapp Closes Funding round with Omidyar Network and HERi Africa

Press Release:

WASHINGTON (February 13, 2017) —  Omidyar Network announced today that it has invested in Landmapp BV, an Amsterdam-based property rights company that enables smallholder farmers to document and protect their land holdings. The investment will help Landmapp to grow its customer base in Ghana, where the company is providing this unique service primarily to cocoa farmers. The transaction also involved participation by HERi Africa, an existing investor in the company. Additional terms of the deal were not disclosed.
